Snorkeling at Caño Island with Boundless Journeys

The pristine Caño Island

Caño Island Biological Reserve

While most of the world’s most famous wild islands are reached by heading out to sea for days at a time, Caño Island lies less than an hour’s boat ride off Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. A perfect choice for nature enthusiasts looking for an exclusive, off-the-beaten-path adventure.

With some of the healthiest coral reefs left in the world, birthing and mating waters for two hemispheres of humpback whales, lots of white tip sharks and giant stingrays, vast schools of fish, and the resident spotted dolphin clan, Cano Island offers the best snorkeling on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

Most of Caño Island Biological Reserve is forbidden to visitors; one small section of beaches and two short trails on the northwest side of the island are all most people are allowed to see. Six dive sites and two snorkel areas, again on the northwest side of the island, make up the meager portion of the marine protected area that is not forbidden. The fact that a great part of the island is sure to be untouched seems to be its greatest attraction.

Back on the mainland, pristine rainforests and the rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula make this region among the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica. Learn more about Boundless Journeys trips to this remote area by visiting our Costa Rica Webpage, or call one of our trip specialists at 1-800-941-8010.

New Project Lends A Hand to Aspiring Travelers

Sharing School Supplies at a school in Peru

Guests distribute school supplies to children in Peru

Hello fellow travelers! I’m excited to be the newest member of the Boundless Journeys team, and I look forward to helping you plan your next dream trip. One of the many things that drew me to Boundless Journeys is their commitment to giving back to the places where they operate—whether making a conscious effort to lighten their travel footprint, bringing supplies to children in remote rural areas, or choosing sustainably minded local partners and hotels.

Recently, an NBC Nightly News “Making a Difference” report profiled a group of photographers that are also giving back in a way that has wider implications for the travel community at large. The project, called Virtual Photo Walks, uses new technology to help the disabled, elderly, and hospitalized experience some of the world’s most far-flung treasures. The premise is simple. Local photographers, armed with their cameras and an attached smart phone, use the Google+ “Hangout” feature (which allows multiple people to video chat simultaneously) to take groups of homebound residents from across the globe along with them on a shoot, experiencing what they do in real time—whether scouting for elephants on an African safari, or strolling a Hawaiian beach at sunset.

The story featured Monica Malone, a young woman with Lupus who dreams of walking the streets of Rome, but whose intense daily pain makes just climbing the flight of stairs to her apartment difficult. Virtual Photo Walks gave Malone the opportunity to finally see the city, and even offered her a glimpse of the Coliseum at night. “I thought, wow. If I could only have a cup of cappuccino, I’d feel like I was there,” she says in the piece.

Founded by photographer John Butterill, Virtual Photo Walks was created to offer the less fortunate the same ability to see the world that most of us take for granted. Although the project currently uses locally based photographers as volunteers, the idea holds real promise for travelers looking to give something back on their next trip. Would it be possible, for instance, to arrange a Google+ Hangout with homebound residents in your own community on that big trek up Machu Picchu, or hiking through Iceland? The need has always been great, and now the technology is available. After all, travel is a gift, and it’s worth sharing.

If you’re interested in learning more or making a donation to Virtual Photo Walks, visit: virtualphotowalks.org.

Tales from the Trail – Italy: Ancient Sicily

Hiking and Walking tours in Sicily with Boundless Journeys

Ahhhh . . . Sicily. I had the pleasure of joining a Boundless Journeys tour to Sicily just a couple of weeks ago. Truly unforgettable moments are now ingrained on my mind as I dream of the incredible pastries we enjoyed, the immense archeological sites we visited, the countryside walks with breathtaking views of the sea, and the palpable energy of the local people.

We were picked up in the busy city of Palermo and began our drive through the Iato Valley. Along the way we had our very first of many Sicilian cappacinos and cannoli. I cannot explain to you the sweetness or richness of these cannoli, made fresh that morning, but my mouth still waters when I think of them.

Our morning walk led us to ancient ruins which do not exist on typical itineraries. We stumbled upon them up on a mountain top and had the entire place to ourselves. Here time seemed to have stopped at a certain moment in the past, enabling us to imagine those who found their home here thousands of years ago.

From here we continued to the town of Erice, with charming old stone streets and medieval churches. Standing atop a mountain (around 750 meters above sea level), overlooking nearby Trapani and the beaches of San Vito Lo Capo, Erice is almost always shrouded in fog. Today, we were lucky, blue skies prevailed. This evening we were treated to a very special aperitif and dinner at our boutique hotel in the center of town.

Our walk on Day 2 took us to the Mount Cofano Reserve. We walked up and over the saddle of Mount Cofano. As we descended, incredible views of an ancient tuna factory and the Mediterranean Sea came into view. Upon reaching the water we dipped our feet into the sea and enjoyed Italian pastries made with sweet almond paste.

This afternoon we visited the Archeological Park of Segesta. Here we sat in the remains of a majestic amphitheater while two Boundless Journeys guests spontaneously performed for us. Imagining we were one of the 4,000 spectators who sat here in ancient days, we applauded their efforts, while taking in the breathtaking panorama of the sea. Later we returned to our hotel in time to take a swim in the infinity pool, overlooking miles of vineyards, before continuing on to our beachfront seafood restaurant for dinner.

Day 3 brought a beautiful walk through the region surrounding the village of Caltabellotta. As we strolled through the countryside we tasted figs, quince, almonds, and walnuts found along the trail. We arrived at our lunch spot in time to help the cook make pasta for our lunch. While he put the finishing touches on our meal, we had the pleasure of dipping our feet in the on-site pool, while enjoying figs and grapes with a fresh glass of Prosecco. Lunch was an event with fresh pasta and sausage, followed by a tower of cannoli accented with bitter orange peel. Afterwards, we returned to our hotel for some rest and relaxation before joining the owner of our hotel for a cooking class. We learned how to make caponata, along with breaded veal, and panella (fried chick pea bread). Afterwards we enjoyed a wine tasting dinner at our hotel, La Foresteria, one of the largest wine producers in Sicily.

The following day we explored the Archeological Park of Selinunte. At 1700 square meters, it is the largest archeological park in Europe. After only two hundred years of history, the remains of the city are still an imposing presence.

This evening we visited perhaps my favorite town on the tour, Castelbuono. Here we were immersed in the local experience. Groups of Italian men were seated outside of their “clubs”, and women looked down from windows above. Many people were at Mass and groups of teenagers hung out on the church steps. There appeared to be no other visitors than ourselves. After a refreshing drink in the center of town, we enjoyed pizza at a local restaurant.

Day 5 brought us to the interior Madonie Mountains, where we enjoyed a hike to a mountain top with sweeping views of Castelbuono and the valley below. Afterwards, we enjoyed a tour of the winery at our hotel. We were also enthralled by our guide, Gianni, who played the flute for us in a small church. Listening to our geologist guide playing Ava Maria on the flute was an enlightening experience.

The next day we explored Cefalù, a lively town on the Tyrrhenian Sea. We enjoyed lunch at a waterfront restaurant. Homemade gelato was the perfect compliment to the large antipasta salads we enjoyed.

Our final day in Sicily was no less incredible than all the others. We hiked through lava fields and immense forests on Mt. Etna. Our guide, with a bottle of wine in his pack, carried a picnic for us to enjoy along the way. Dinner this evening was exquisitely served to us on a rooftop overlooking the town of Taormina – a perfect conclusion to our Italian experience.

Perhaps because it is an island, or perhaps because Sicilian’s consider themselves impregnable to outsiders, Sicily is an experience unlike any other I have had in Italy. From flamboyant cathedrals, to immense Greek temples, to ancient lava flows, and sweet pastries, the past is present in the smallest details. As J.W. Goethe wrote in Journey to Italy, “To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to have not seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.”

Sea Kayaking and Snorkeling in Micronesia’s Palau

Many Islands to explore

Imagine the whitest beaches you will ever see, gardens of coral just beneath the clearest waters, lakes filled to the brim with “sting less” jellyfish, forests, waterfalls and caves that have never been ravaged by man, and hundreds of islands of the purest beauty . . . this is Micronesia’s Palau. Featured in National Geographic 50 tours of a lifetime, Boundless Journeys Palau: Oceania Odyssey tour includes 10 days of world-class sea kayaking and snorkeling, hikes to archeological wonders and hidden waterfalls, full-service camping on the Rock Islands, and deluxe beachfront lodging.

Often a highlight of the tour, our camping portion includes full days immersed in nature with the most experienced local guides and camp staff. Our days begin early as guests quickly fall into the habit of waking up with the sunrise and going to bed early after gently paced but full days of adventure. Coffee, tea, and biscuits greet us with the sun, followed by a sit down breakfast and a briefing of the day. After everyone has their bearings, we depart camp by kayak for a day of gentle paddling, calm water snorkeling, bird watching, caving, beach combing, and natural history talks. A picnic lunch is typically on a secluded beach en route. After refueling we jump back into natural history touring for the afternoon, and generally return to camp in the late afternoon or early evening. The decision on when to end the day depends largely on the energy level and enthusiasm of the group. A grand reward at the end of the day, we indulge in a freshly prepared multi-course dinner served after cocktails and sunset on the beach. For those adventurers who are not ready to retire, we frequently offer excursions for night fishing, land crabbing, night snorkeling, or after dinner bonfires.

Great for a family adventure

If this sounds like a bit of paradise to you, give us a call at 1-900-941-8010 to learn more about this epic adventure in Micronesia’s westernmost island chain, or visit our Palau Web page by clicking here.

bhutan tours

Arrival in the Kingdom of Bhutan

It happens to everybody, even those of us who live, breathe, eat, and dream the travel industry – when faced with the question “how long does it take to get there?” we can freeze like the proverbial fawn in high beams.

Time zones, time differences, flight directions, date lines, layovers – all of these factors can contribute to the length of a journey, and sometimes as adventurers we are more easily enthralled with the whimsy and rewards of a destination rather than the details on how to get there.

Deborah Tobey, a fellow Destination Manager here at Boundless Journeys, has discovered an internet gem in assisting with the logistical questions that may not be heavy on the glamour, but still reign supreme in the planning.

www.travelmath.com can help you with the numerical and mathematical conundrums associated with international travel (just in case you don’t have the World Time Zone Index memorized or aren’t able to guestimate the travel time between LAX and BKK).

Remember that whimsy I mentioned? Its easy to get excited about ziplining in Costa Rica, game viewing in Botswana, or trekking in Peru, but all of these experiences still require crossed t’s and dotted i’s in terms of travel planning. This is why Boundless Journeys is always happy to help supply you with tools to ensure a seamless adventure from door to door, whether it be our own expertise or a helpful external resource. Have any favorite helpful travel sites? Feel free to pass them along via info@boundlessjourneys.com and we’ll share them on our Blog and Facebook.

Get to know Boundless Journeys

Deborah Tobey, Destination Manager

What types of trips do you offer and who are your customers?

Many consider Boundless Journeys trips to be a bucket list for the adventurer’s soul. Our itineraries span from majestic peaks to lush landscapes, from serene deserts to dramatic coastlines, and from historical meccas to the world’s great wildernesses. We match these unique lands with the best possible ways to experience them, combining engaging activities with serendipitous events that reflect our passion for discovery. Although we offer some challenging physical adventures – treks and expeditions – these are complemented by more leisurely cultural explorations and incredible wildlife experiences in the Boundless Journeys collection. You may find yourself trekking past Andean peaks, kayaking the calm waters of Palau, or sampling the finest vintages in a Tuscan hilltop village after a beautifully scenic walk. No matter which journey you choose, the opportunities for adventure are, well, boundless.

Our guests are active people who enjoy traveling off the beaten path with small groups of like minded travelers. There are no large tour buses or long lines to stand in – our journeys tap into local character, exploring back roads, intimate spots, and the lesser-known gems that exude a sense of place.

Can I physically handle a Boundless Journeys trip? How do I know if I am fit enough?

It’s amusing how often we get this question, or hear from people that they think that they will not be able to handle one of our trips.  We offer a variety of trips that are appropriate for all fitness levels. Give us a call and our home team will be happy to chat with you about the trip you are interested in. When you call, you’ll be able to speak with someone who is knowledgeable about the trip you are considering. On the easy end of the spectrum we offer nature trips such as African Safaris and Galapagos Cruises, and cultural excursions to places like India and Indochina. These all require very little physical exertion. Next we have easy walking tours such as Tuscany, Ireland, and Turkey, which involve relatively easy strolling through beautiful countryside wrapped up in charming inns and hotels, with fine cuisine, and excellent local guides.  We have many other journeys that escalate in challenge to our most challenging trips which tend to be trekking adventures in the Andes or Himalayas. We really do have something for everyone, easy to hard, young to old.

What is the most fun part about your company?

Exploring the world and meeting new people. Each travel experience presents an opportunity to broaden our horizons and re-discover ourselves.

Tell us about a favorite travel moment.

Ice climbing on the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier in Iceland. About 10 women and I donned crampons, helmets, harnesses, and ice picks as we set off on this exciting adventure. Together we explored ice caves and crevasses and enjoyed a picnic on the densely packed, blue-tinged ice. The mutual trust and friendship that arose in a short time from embarking on this new experience together was what made it so special.

Resuming Tours in Egypt

By

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Tours to EgyptI am delighted to announce that as of April 1st, Boundless Journeys is resuming our tours in Egypt. Just a few weeks ago we were unsure what the future would hold for this country – so full of history – that was suddenly making history again. Although the story is not yet finished, 2011 may prove to be one of the very best times to visit the sites of Egypt, with a feeling of optimism in the local people and sites that are a bit less busy than before.

We are keeping our eyes on developments, and are in close contact with our staff in Cairo and around the country. We’ve arranged for more flexible cancellation policies, so that you can book with confidence that if you need to change your plans, you’ll be able to do so easily. Give me a call at 1-800-941-8010 or e-mail karen@boundlessjourneys.com if you’d like to know more!
